I’m mobile OS agnostic. I love Android for its beautiful material design, customization and ability to use the file system the way I want it. I love iOS for its simplicity, fluidity and the app ecosystem. But what I don’t love is the back button, whether it is on iOS or Android, being on the top left of an almost 6″ screen.

It just doesn’t make sense.

I have an iPhone 6S Plus and while I’m a little used to the size because my other phone is a Note 5, it’s still a pain to reach up and hit that back button. But BoxWave has come out with a product aimed to fix this issue.

The BoxWave ClearTouch SmartButtons Tempered Glass Screen Protector adds two touch sensitive areas flanking the home button on your iPhone. While these don’t technically add a “back” button to your phone, they do let you press whatever is in the top right and left corners of your screen by placing your thumb in these areas. Since the back button is always in the top left and confirmation buttons tend to show up in the top right, that is generally how you’re going to use your new buttons.

There are no visual cues on the screen that you have buttons there. The only thing you’ll see on the screen protector at all are two white little buttons on the bottom left and right where you place your finger to activate the buttons. Otherwise, it looks exactly like any other tempered glass screen protector.

Although you can’t see anything on the screen, you definitely know something is different. If you place your thumb correctly on the buttons, you’ll almost always get a reaction. If you don’t place your entire thumb, you may miss out. One of the only issues I had, though is that if you’re actually trying to touch the top left and right corners of the screen with your fingers, you may have to hit it a couple of extra times. I can only assume this is from the invisible lines running up and down the sides.

My only other gripe is that it isn’t a full panel screen protector. It doesn’t follow the curved edges of the iPhone on either side, top or bottom. Other cases like the Moshi iVisor will get you better coverage but you won’t be getting back and confirm buttons like on the BoxWave screen protector.

Other than that, it’s like every other screen protector out there. It’s going to keep your phone safe from scratches and installation is pretty easy. I unfortunately screwed up and got some dirt in there but BoxWave includes everything you need to get the job done correctly.

To sum up, I’d say that the BoxWave ClearTouch SmartButtons Tempered Glass Screen Protector is an ordinary screen protector with an extraordinary features. I love that there is a back button on the bottom left of my home button now. Once I got used to having it there, it changed how I used my phone for the better. I definitely recommend picking one of these up if you’re going to get a screen protector anyway or are looking for a solution for your huge phone problems. At $18, this is a can’t miss.
